My "Food" Lifestyle

 

I have tried a lot of things... Counting Calories, Weight Watchers, Whole30 and more!




I have never found more freedon with any other "diet" as I have by doing IIFYM (If It Fits Your Macros.)

I get a TON of questions about counting macros - What is it... How I do it... So I hope that reading below and the short video that I include helps you make a decision if counting macros is right for you!


So, here is my run down: “Macros” What are they?

There are three macronutrients, or Macros:

  • Proteins

  • Fats

  • Carbohydrates

What helped me understand macros best is understanding where our daily calorie goal comes from.

Every macronutrient has a certain amount of calories per gram. Carbs are 4 calories per gram, fats are 9 calories per gram and protein is 4 calories per gram. This helps you understand how the calorie content in your food came to be. So, If I eat an imaginary food that has 1g carbs, 1 g fat, 1g protein, the calories for that food should equal 17 calories!

So, counting macros is essentially calorie counting but it puts an emphasis on WHERE your calories are coming from. Macros put a big emphasis on always hitting your protein… Adequate protein intake will help build muscle and/or prevent muscle loss if you are in a calorie deficit.  It controls appetite causes you to feel full longer. So protein is super important.

You may see people that count their macros eating all types of crazy foods from candy bars to my favorite, ice cream as long as “it fits your macros.” That is because macros counting allows you to eat ANYTHING as long as it fits, so they may eat a snickers for dessert and then fill the rest of their day with nutrient dense vegetables and protein.

Living a macros lifestyle is all about balance and choices. It’s really a game of volume. You can either eat a lot of healthy stuff or you can eat something more calorie dense, just less of it!

Counting Macros has improved my life for the better! I have found a freedom eating food that I haven’t been able to find with any other program. It has been amazing.
